Kríž je najcharakteristickejším symbolom kresťanstva a jeho zobrazenie nájdeme takmer v každom kresťanskom chráme a kresťanskej domácnosti a nič na tom nemení ani ten fakt, že je to v podstate len nástroj mučenia a neskonalej krutosti človeka. Na kríži visí zmučené telo človeka, preto pre tých, ktorí v kresťanskom prostredí nevyrastali a nerozumejú mu, sa kríž môže stať aj pohoršením alebo aspoň niečím, čo si žiada vysvetlenie. Napríklad Daisetz Taitaro Suzuki, významný majster Zenu, profesor budhistickej filozofie v Kjóte píše: „ Pohľad na ukrižovaného Krista je strašný a ja si nemôžem pomôcť, v mojej predstave sa spája so sadistickým impulzom duševne podráždenej fantázie." Prečo teda nám kresťanom visí nad hlavami niečo tak strašné? Je to preto, že máme záľubu v utrpení a vyhľadávame ho? Určite nie, v utrpení mať záľubu totiž nemožno a ani ho netreba vyhľadávať , ono je totiž úplne všade. Milióny a milióny ľudí neskonale trpí a my nič nevidíme a nič nepočujeme. V každom okamihu obrovské množstvo blížnych volá o pomoc, ale svet mlčí. Avšak posolstvo kríža ide ešte ďalej a je naliehavejšie, pretože nie je len o utrpení človeka, ale najmä o utrpení Boha.

 

My ľudia si vieme pred hrôzou zakryť aspoň oči a sluch a pred bolesťou aspoň nachvíľu uniknúť pomocou utišujúceho prostriedku, ale Boh to nemá v povahe. Boh osobne prežíva každú jednu bolesť na tomto svete, prežíva ju v plnej intenzite a úplne do konca. Keď vidíme trpieť nevinných , zvykneme sa pýtať, kde je Boh, ale Boh sa pýta, kde ste vy, ktorí o sebe tvrdíte, že ste spravodliví a dobrí?
Posolstvo kríža však nie je len o utrpení, tým by si ešte nezaslúžil tak dôležité miesto v našich chrámoch a domácnostiach. Kristus na ňom totiž visel len krátko, po niekoľkých hodinách bol sňatý, aby po troch dňoch vstal z mŕtvych. Ak sa teda úprimne pozerám na kríž, je pre mňa nad slnko jasnejšie, že kráľovstvo hrôzy, bolesti a ľudskej krutosti má len krátke trvanie, ale kráľovstvo lásky pravdy a Božieho pokoja trvá naveky a nakoniec má vždy to posledné slovo. Kríž ma teda vyzýva, aby som sa ja sám slobodne rozhodol, ktorému kráľovstvu vo viere odovzdám svoje srdce, pretože v hĺbke srdca sa stanem presne tým, čomu nakoniec uverím.
